Veteran Ghanaian highlife musician Amakye Dede made the startling admission that he was forced into naming young highlife and Afro-beat singer Kuami Eugene as the country’s next highlife king.
Amakye Dede received harsh criticism from numerous members of the music industry, including record producer Zapp Mallet, as a result of this occurrence.
Amakye Dede spoke openly about the events leading up to the moment of glory on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday. He stated that he had no interest or purpose of granting Kuami Eugene the title, implying that outside forces played a role in his decision.
“Though I did that, it was not my will to do so.They forced me to crown Kuami Eugene,” he said.
Amakye Dede disclosed that at first he even made an attempt to pass the crown that had been presented to him onto a different person while refusing to take part in the act. He eventually had to perform the coronation against his will, nevertheless.
“I even gave the crown they handed over to me to someone to put it down, but they later said, no I have to crown him, and I did it,” he added.
By disclosing this information, the Su fre wo Nyame hitmaker shed insight on the dynamics that existed behind the scenes prior to the contentious crowning moment.
The information deepens the ongoing debates and criticisms surrounding Kuami Eugene’s selection as the next highlife king.
